The ‘My Wild Winter’ pack – which is being aimed for children to take part in - is full of ideas of how to explore nature and wild places locally, as part of the permitted daily exercise during Lockdown 3.

The pack is completely free to sign up to and gives lots of tips and inspiration on how best to enjoy and support the natural world during winter.

The pack includes information on what wildlife to look out for, instructions on how to make your own bird feeders or nest boxes, a wildlife spotter sheet and puzzles and activities.

The Trust is also encouraging people of all ages to sign up for its ‘Get Wild at Home’ virtual classroom experience, which launched last year at the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Get Wild at Home brings some of the charity’s most popular and best attended events and activities direct to people’s homes and features an array of nature themed resources to enjoy.

They include videos with staff including workshops such as creating a mini-beast hotel, outdoor play, natural art and bushcraft.

Lauren Penny, Senior Marketing Officer for Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, said: “It is easy to think winter is quiet time for nature but there is actually lots to see and do – and it’s a season where wildlife needs our help the most.

“We realise that this is a difficult time for many, so we want to encourage young people, families and individuals to get the most of the natural world while following all Covid-19 guidelines.

“The ‘My Wild Winter’ pack and ‘Get Wild at Home’ programme allow them to do that, and hopefully it’ll help make the coming weeks and months a bit easier.

“Several studies have shown that getting closer to nature brings an array of benefits for mental and physical health. And even though it is cold outside, winter is still an excellent time to enjoy the natural world.

“We have had to pause our People Engagement events during Lockdown 3, but hopefully both the ‘My Wild Winter’ pack and ‘Get Wild at Home’ will help fill the void.”
