What is Citizen Science

To be able to protect, enhance, and conserve our natural spaces and species we need to be able to know what condition they are in and where to find them. This can be achieved through collecting information to help build a picture of how our spaces and habitats are changing. The collection of data through community volunteers is called citizen science.

Citizen Science can be carried out by anyone at any time, as part of a dedicated volunteer survey team, or just through taking notice whilst out on a walk. The data gathered can make a huge difference in identifying any changes to a habitats and species, building evidence for the success of environmental restoration projects, and help us understand our environment.

A woman standing in golden light of dawn or dusk appears to have just lowered binoculars from her face as she stares into the distance. Behind her is a row of trees and shore line of a lake.
