Celebrating Staffordshire's Wildlife

Exciting news - our competition is now open for entries!

Through our photography competition we aim to inspire and encourage our county's nature lovers to get out and about with their cameras. By creating a stunning charity calendar together, we can share the natural wonders of our incredible county with many others and raise vital funds to protect and restore Staffordshire's wildlife.

The categories

This year's competition has six categories to choose from. We're encouraging entries from under 18s who will be judged separately. So whether you love the detailed world of macro or love exploring our reserves to capture our stunning Staffordshire landscapes, we want to see your shots!

Action

Freeze frame those moments, whether it’s a clash (like last year’s winner), a sprint or a dive, we want your best motion shots.

Colour

Nature is filled with all the colours of the rainbow; from vibrant beetles and blooming heather to the rich golden hues of autumn. Colour is everywhere.

Mini marvels

Dedicated to the world of macro photography, capturing the intricate and finite details of nature with careful consideration to lighting, composition and colour.

Staffordshire's scenery

Dedicated to Staffordshire’s many stunning habitats – dappled woodland glades, rugged moorland vistas or heathlands covered in blooming heather. We’d really love to see your captures of SWT nature reserves but your landscape can be anywhere in Staffordshire.

Wildlife portrait

This category is all about the subject, whether it's a close-up (with a telephoto lens) or a wider shot showing them in their habitat. We're looking for images which capture the very essence of the creature. Using light, contrast and composition is key to create a captivating photo that shows the subject off in all their natural glory.

Connection

We need nature, both for our physical and mental health. Show us how people and nature connect and how nature enriches our lives. Remember if those featured in your photo can be identified, then you must have permission to use the photograph and you must download a consent form for them to complete. Distant photos where the person's face isn't clear, or those taken from behind can be entered without a completed form.

Under 18s

A chance for budding young photographers to show off their skills. Entrants aged 18 and under can submit their photo to any of the five categories above. These entries will be judged as a separate 'junior' category so must select the under 18 tick box when entering. Only one winner will be selected from this category to enjoy a 121 photography workshop at The Wolseley Centre as their prize. Remember that entrants will need to have consent of a parent or guardian to enter.

Judging

Once the competition closes the initial judging will take place... A panel of judges from SWT will be joined by last year's winner, Justin Evans, to pick the 12 images for the 2026 calendar. The final stage will be a public vote. All 12 images will be revealed for members of the public to pick their favourite - deciding the overall winning image which will take centre stage on the front of our calendar next year.

An extra special prize

This year's overall winner will win a very unique prize... Not only will their image feature on the front of our Wild Staffordshire calendar for 2026, they will also be invited to join us for a very exciting wildlife moment. They'll get the chance to enjoy a close-up with Staffordshire's newest beavers.

In early 2026, we plan to release beavers (at a location to be revealed) and you could be joining us to witness this incredible moment! The overall winner of the competition will be able to see these ecosystem engineers as we welcome them and get an exciting behind the scenes opportunity to capture the moment.
